Almo upgrades to Aico smoke alarms with RadioLINK

3rd January 2012

Newark and Sherwood Homes has upgraded to using Aico’s RadioLINK technology to wirelessly interconnect Aico mains powered alarms within its housing stock.

An Arm’s Length Management Organisation established to maintain and improve Newark and Sherwood District Council’s social housing stock, Newark and Sherwood Homes has embarked on a major upgrade programme, installing Aico alarms into properties that have no smoke alarms and replacing old alarms in those that do.  The first phase of the programme involves 700 properties, with a second phase just awarded on a further 500.  The aim is to install Aico mains powered smoke alarms across all 5500 of its properties in time.

Two to three Aico alarms have been fitted per property on average, many with RadioLINK bases which allow them to be wirelessly interconnected through the use of Radio Frequency (RF) signals.  If one alarm on the system is triggered, RF signals are sent to cause every other alarm in the property to sound.  This ensures the alarm is heard throughout the property, providing the earliest warning to the occupants.

Shane Cook, Electrical Compliance Engineer for Newark and Sherwood Homes, explains the organisation’s choice: “The decision of installing the RadioLINK smoke alarms into houses, maisonettes and ground floor flats was to minimise the disturbance to our customers i.e. we did not take any carpets or floor boards up or install PVC trunking around the ceilings.  We used standard hard-wired interconnect mains powered alarms in the bungalows and first floor flats; this was because we could run cables in the loft space easily.”

New to Aico, Shane has been impressed not only by the product but also by the service he has received: “The service from Aico has been excellent; they provided Newark and Sherwood Homes with comprehensive product information, and are always there for advice to the contractors and myself if needed.”

Newark and Sherwood Homes were also keen to make the most of the range of services offered by Aico, including the Aico Fire Products Trained Installer Scheme (AFPTIS).  Aico’s AFPTIS has been running for a number of years now and is dedicated to providing contractors with the information and training necessary to achieve a successful and effective smoke alarm installation.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Aico is the first name in residential fire protection in the UK.  Aico fire alarms are designed and built in Europe specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations.  For more information please visit www.aico.co.uk.
