Cablofil helps keep Olympic Media Centre on course

25th May 2012

As the world’s athletes limber up for London 2012, Cablofil has been helping to ensure that the world gets to see the agony and the ecstasy of the Olympics by supplying more than nine miles of steel wire tray for the International Broadcast Centre (IBC).

Designed to provide a base for the world’s media to report on the Games, the vast 42,000m2 media centre combines huge double height studios with four levels of office accommodation located just by the hockey and handball pitches in the Olympic Complex.  Constructed at a cost of £308 million, the facility will boast state of the art data and broadcasting facilities along with a UPS system that will ensure consistent coverage round the clock.

Electrical contractor, Designer Group, has installed Cablofil steel wire tray in varying sizes ranging from 150mm to 600mm throughout the studio areas and corridors, erecting bespoke steel frames and brackets in order to overcome the challenges of the enormous ceiling heights and lack of ceiling void. The Cablofil system will be used to provide containment for all small power and data cabling, including the cabling for the lighting, fire systems, HVAC and UPS.

Designer Group will complete the installation in May, ready for the IBC to be fully tested and commissioned before the Games begin in July.

Comments Paul Courson, managing director of Cablofil: “The Olympic Games is one of the biggest events in the media calendar and the IBC will be packed full of journalists and camera crews when the Games begin so everything has to be perfect.  The speed of installation and flexibility of the Cablofil system, including our Fasclic couplers, has helped to keep this massive installation to schedule, ensuring that the media will be just as well-prepared to hit the ground running as the athletes.”
