Cheap LED lamps can cause radio interference, says the consumer protection magazine Which?
In its latest issue, it has tested a range of solid state light sources, and some of the low-cost units – bought on the high street – have been discovered to create significant radio interference.
LED lamps sold on the European market should, by law, carry the CE mark, which is a statement by the manufacturer that the product complies with all the relevant EU legislation, including, crucially, the product safety standards and directives. Electromagnetic compatibility – or EMC – is covered under EN55015.
The revelation will once again raise the issue of market surveillance. Currently this falls under the remit of trading standards, but industry bodies are increasingly concerned that low-quality and poor performing product is reaching the market, damaging customer experience and slowing adoption of LED lighting technology.
