First UK maintenance free junction box to meet 17th edition

14th September 2011

Hager claims that its maintenance free junction box is the only junction box to meet the requirements of Amendment 1 of the 17th Edition for maintenance free connections.

Says Jane Yorke, product manager for Hager:  “Our maintenance free junction boxes are, and have always been, compliant with the new demands of both Amendment 1 and BS 5733.”

The company’s products, J803 and J804, contain sprung push fit terminals that do not relax and therefore do not need to be accessible for future inspection.  The standard BS 5733 defines tests for the terminals that include long-term connection test, pull out, voltage drop, temperature rise and exposure to corrosive atmospheres.

Says Yorke,:  “The 17th Edition Amendment 1 has bought clarity in defining which products meet the specific requirements for electrical connections described in Regulation 526.3 and made compliance visible by ruling that products are  marked with the symbol MF.

“Using a junction box is the easiest and fastest means of achieving connections when cable needs to be extended, however many people do not use the correct type of junction box for the installation and are therefore not compliant with BS 7671.

“The biggest issue is generally accessibility for inspection and maintenance.   If connections are made below a floor covered by carpet, laminate floor or tiles then they are effectively inaccessible and maintenance free connections must be used.  Your best advice is to refer to the Electrical Safety Council Technical manual.”

Hager’s maintenance free junction box is robust, easy to install and compliant with both the 17th edition and the new junction box standard BS EN 60670-22 and the new revision of BS 5733.  It is also faster and easier to install than alternative solutions prescribed by the regulations - such as soldering.

The terminals accept and secure solid, stranded or flexible conductors from 0.5mm2 to 4mm2.  Twin and CPC and flexible cords can all be mixed.  You then secure the cage clamp terminal using a screwdriver or finger to push down on the pushbutton.

Wiring is fast and simple.  The new maintenance free junction boxes fits comfortably in the hand and you can clamp the cables for easier connection.  There is plenty of cabling space and the lid hinges through 360o for unrestricted access.  The terminals are clearly labelled with mouldings in the base.

All the cables are clamped securely so there is no strain on the terminal connections and no risk of exposed unsheathed conductors. The cable clamps are reversible to allow either single or double cable entry.

There are two products in the new range, a three terminal 32A and a four terminal 20A version.  Constructed from polycarbonate, the junction boxes will withstand impact damage and when installed they have a rating of IP2X.

Finally the junction box has two fixing points for securing to joists or another support.
