Landlords will be required to install fire and carbon monoxide alarms by law

12th March 2015

Landlords will be required by law to install working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their properties, under measures announced today.

Housing Minister Brandon Lewis says the move will help prevent up to 36 deaths and 1,375 injuries a year.

The action comes after a Torbay MP Adrian Sanders raised the proposal in a Private Member's Bill in 2011 following the deaths of two children in Torquay in 2009.

The measure is expected to take effect from October 2015.

Commenting for MIDA Preferred Supplier AICO – Neal Hooper says; “This is the news we have been anticipating on CO alarms and is going to be very big indeed for our industry.”

“AICO sold 300,000 CO alarms last year to this precise landlord client base via distributors only - a total of £8m.” This figure will now soar. Perfect timing for AICO as we are about to launch AudioLink in all CO alarms.”

AudioLink allows data extraction of all alarm information ( CO build up, battery life, alarm age, sensor condition, false alarming, test history) and is unique. All downloaded onto phones and tablets via a free app.

More information about this will follow soon but you can be sure to access these new solutions via the MIDA network of electrical distributors which can be seen at www.mida.co.uk
