Sails up for Flexicon at Cowes

13th September 2011

It was sails up and all hands on deck for Flexicon, the leading flexible conduit manufacturer, at the recent Cowes Week sailing regatta, where an intrepid crew of staff and customers achieved a creditable “top ten“ finish after 5 days of intense sailing competition.

The team were skippering and crewing “Liaison”, a 49ft Jeanneau Sun Odyssey, which competed in racing classes on five days of Cowes Week, held on the Solent from August 6th to13th,2011.

Cowes Week attracts 8,500 competitors, ranging from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors, and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. The event has played a key part in the British summer calendar since 1826 and is now one of the UK's most successful sporting events, with up to 40 races every day for around 1,000 boats

The Flexicon crew’s best result came on the second day, when the good ship Liaison finished 4th out of a very competitive field of 25 boats in the ISC Rating System class, the best result ever achieved by a Liaison crew. This was closely followed by fifth positions on both days four and five, adding up to an overall finishing position of 8th for the week.

A mix of between 11 and 14 Flexicon employees and leading customers formed the crew on board each day and the event provided an exciting and challenging environment, as Tim Creedon, Flexicon’s Sales and Marketing Director, commented: “It was great to see customers and staff working together as a real crew on board, with some very competitive attitudes to racing and winning. Teamwork and hands on action was vital, especially when we were battling adverse winds and tides. Fortunately, we had no “man overboard” moments and everyone came through in shipshape fashion”.

The marine sector is an important niche market for Flexicon’s flexible conduit as on -board electrics for power, lighting, navigation and communication systems are vital to safety and performance. The saltwater environment and continuous motion and vibration is challenging for electrical systems, which need good protection.
