Terminal 2A contract proves Cablofil has the edge at Heathrow

3rd September 2012

Cablofil steel wire tray is to be used as the cable management system throughout Heathrow’s new £2.5 billion Terminal 2A building thanks to the system’s unique safety edge.

Due to open in 2014, the improved T2A will be extended to match the size of Terminal 5, enabling most of the 20 million passengers that will use the terminal each year to transfer within the same building.  The electrical installation will be carried out using pre-fabricated service modules manufactured off-site in Oldbury and the Cablofil system will be used in all modules in the ceiling void, under the floors and as risers.

Cablofil is no stranger to Heathrow as the Cablofil system was the chosen cable management for the Terminal 5 project. While a different system was originally specified for T2, it was changed to Cablofil to address concerns about the snagging risk to data cables.  Cablofil’s unique safety edge means that there is no risk of snagging as cables are pulled through the steel wire tray and this feature, along with the system’s quality design and track record, secured the change of specification.

More than 20 miles of Cablofil steel wire tray will be used for the project in sizes ranging from 300mm to 600mm. Most of the cable management infrastructure will be assembled as pre-fabricated service modules to ensure consistency of installation quality, speed of installation and reduced working at height health and safety risk, with a small amount being installed in-situ.

Comments UK managing director of Cablofil, Paul Courson: “Heathrow’s Terminal 5 was one of the biggest jobs that Cablofil has ever been involved with and the extension to T2A is equally huge and prestigious. Our system is not only robust but expertly designed, offering a full range of accessories and the safety edge which both protects cables from damage and prevents injury for installation teams. We’re delighted to be involved, yet again, with one of the biggest projects in the UK and to be part of building on Heathrow’s reputation as one of the world’s leading airports.”
