AICO Multi-Sensor specified in Manchester Council's first new homes in 20 years

4th January 2011

Northwards Housing, on behalf of Manchester City Council, has specified Aico’s unique RadioLINK Multi-Sensor mains powered fire alarm for its 32 new council homes in north Manchester, the first in the city in more than 20 years.

A £4.2m project, the high quality, sustainable new homes are purpose built two bedroom bungalows for older residents. The homes will be owned by Manchester City Council and managed by Northwards Housing, the not for profit company that manages city council homes in north Manchester.

Aico’s Multi-Sensor was chosen for this new development due to the layout of the bungalows having the bathroom and kitchen directly opposite each other which might cause standard alarms to false alarm from the combination of hot steam and cooking vapours. The Multi-Sensor is resistant to false alarms as it contains two separate sensors – Optical and Heat – so, unlike single sensor alarms, is capable of monitoring both smoke and heat. Its response to all fire types is therefore significantly improved and it is less vulnerable to false alarms.

Initially one Multi-Sensor will be fitted in the central hallway between the kitchen and bathroom in the new bungalows. However, the alarms have been installed with an Aico RadioLINK base which, Alan White, Principal Electrical Engineer at Northwards Housing, explains “allows for future expansion of the fire detection system to suit any specific resident’s needs, without disturbance to decor or stress.......The multi sensor with the RF base gives increased design options with future expansion.”

RadioLINK works by allowing alarms to be wirelessly interconnected through the use of Radio-frequency (RF) signals. If one alarm on the system is triggered, RF signals are sent to cause every other alarm in the property to sound. This ensures the alarm is heard throughout the property, providing the earliest warning.

Manchester City Council has been using Aico fire detection products for many years, so the decision to specify Aico in the new bungalows was based on a good understanding of the company’s product quality and support.

Started in March 2010 and expected to be completed by March 2011, this new generation of council homes are part of a wider Manchester City Council led regeneration programme in north Manchester.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Aico is the first name in residential fire protection in the UK. Aico fire alarms are designed and built in Europe specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations. For more information please visit www.aico.co.uk.
