Aico warns of CO danger from all fossil fuel burning appliances

13th January 2012

With much attention focussed on the importance of regular boiler maintenance, other sources of Carbon Monoxide (CO) in the home are often disregarded with potentially dangerous consequences, states Smoke and CO alarm manufacturer Aico.

Aico’s warning comes after a recent BBC report on a lady in Camelford, Cornwall, who despite having her gas boiler serviced every year, had been unknowingly breathing in CO for ten years from her cooker.  Having become very ill over a long period of time and suffering a heart attack, she was finally diagnosed with CO poisoning but will now have to use a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

“This tragic case goes to show that whilst servicing of boilers by Gas Safe Registered installers is vital, other fossil fuel burning appliances such as cookers and gas fires also pose a hazard and need regular maintenance” states Michael Wright, Product Manager at Aico.  “But in reality, how many people get their cookers serviced regularly, if ever?  To make sure you are fully protected against CO – from all sources - the only practical solution is to install quality CO alarms.”

Aico provides a comprehensive range of CO alarms including mains powered models for the best protection and Aico’s latest range of quality, cost-effective Lithium battery powered alarms where budgets are restricted.

Aico CO alarms are designed and manufactured to the highest quality, with the CO sensor pre-calibrated and tested in CO gas to ensure accuracy and each and every alarm individually tested during manufacture.  They come with a range of features including an indication of the level of CO detected, a pre alarm indication for early warning of CO, a memory feature which enables the user to tell if CO has been detected during a period of absence and the ability to easily interconnect them to other devices without the disruption of hard-wiring.

Aico supports its product range with extensive advice on how to protect yourself, customers and tenants from CO in the home.  Its comprehensive Guide to Carbon Monoxide has recently been launched which looks at where CO comes from, what can go wrong with appliances, why CO alarms should be fitted, what to look for in a CO alarm, where alarms should be sited and much more.  Copies of the Guide to Carbon Monoxide are available from Aico by registering online at www.aico.co.uk.

Aico is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics.  All alarms are designed and built in Europe specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations.  For sales information, please go to www.aico.co.uk or contact Aico on 0870 758 4000 or enquiries@aico.co.uk.
