Further defective cable found in DIY Store

17th August 2011

The Approved Cables Initiative can reveal that during on-going market surveillance in June more defective Atlas Kablo cable has been discovered in a Homebase store in Darlington.

Atlas Kablo cable was the subject of a manufacturer’s product recall last summer when several cables were identified as defective. At the time it was believed that these cables had been sold directly to electrical contractors, however ACI surveillance later in the year found that cable had been available to the public through two major DIY chains – an audience less informed about the dangers of such cable.

Atlas Kablo has since ceased trading. Yet despite this, some distributors have disregarded the product recall and the defective cable remains on sale. This cable was made in Turkey and imported into the UK by an unknown number of cable distributors.

Responding to this latest discovery Homebase, the UK’s largest home and garden enhancement retailer, issued a statement advising that they no longer buy from the supplier that delivered unapproved stock to them. Homebase believed that all affected stock had been removed from its stores and returned to the supplier and was very concerned to hear that this was not the case.

The company has since carried out an investigation and found that the stock purchased in Darlington was a genuine oversight and was removed as soon as it was brought to the company’s attention. Homebase is confident that no further stock remains on sale and that it has all now been returned to the supplier.

The ACI would like to stress the need for continued vigilance by all those responsible for purchasing cable. To date more than half of the estimated 20 million metres of defective cable shipped to UK customers has been identified and destroyed.
